Getting Ready for Holiday Guests

11/12/2018 (Permalink)

The holiday season brings with it crisp weather, comfy family sweaters, and a lot of visiting family and friends. Opening your doors to others during this season creates a sense of community and connection that’s cherished all year long.

But preparing for guests is quite daunting. It requires a lot of planning to ensure that everyone feels comfortable and welcomed.

Fortunately, these preparation tips will help you smoothly glide through the process.

How to Guest-ify Your Home for Holiday Visitors

Use these tips to give your guests the best experience this holiday season:

1. Clear Up the Entryway

Your foyer is the first place your guests will see, so strive to make a good first impression by decluttering it. Place a beautiful welcome mat at the entryway to protect your floors from snow and mud. Clear out extra shoes, coats, and umbrellas. Add more hooks or racks for guests to hang their hats and coats.

2. Stash a Lot of Food

Make your holiday visitors feel more welcomed by stocking your kitchen cabinets with pantry staples and snacks. Also, include things like fruits and veggies in your refrigerator and show your guests where everything is located.

For drinks, stock up on a lot of bottled water, a variety of sparkling drinks and sodas – or whatever your guests prefer. If they enjoy nightcaps, stock several bottles of red and white wine. If you know of any allergies, be sure to ask them what foods are acceptable before you stock up your kitchen.

3. Revamp the Guest Bedrooms

Ensure your guests have at least two pillows each – one soft and the other firm so that they can pick the one that suits the sleeping styles.

While the beddings might have been clean when you stored them, it’s always advisable to wash them to get rid of the dust and odor that they may have accumulated over time. Additionally, have a few light blankets that can be layered neatly into bed just in case it gets extra cold at night.

And, if the bedroom isn’t attached to a bathroom, have the path to the bathroom lowly lit throughout the night. While you can navigate your house blindfolded, your visitors can’t. Nightlights or small lamps are great lighting ideas that will prevent your guests from bumping into furniture as they make their way to the bathroom in the middle of the night.

Furthermore, keep a few types of magazines or the local newspaper at the bedside table to keep your guests entertained.

Provide an open space in the room where your visitors can keep their luggage and suitcases. Clean out and organize the closets, drawers, and shelves to provide enough space for the guests to unpack.

4. Stock up the Bathroom

Toilet paper! Probably the most important toiletry you shouldn’t run out of when you have guests. Depending on the number of people you have over, you’ll be surprised at how many rolls are used in just a few days. So make sure that you have more than enough. Also, keep extra rolls at logical areas where visitors can easily access.

Other than toilet papers, keep a few bottles of shampoo, conditioner, lotion, and body wash. Ensure that your visitors have clean sets of towels all through their stay. And since it’s very easy for them to forget which towels are theirs, consider giving a different color set of towels to each visitor.

5. Create a Mini Information Station

If they’ll be staying for a few days or if you’ll be working during their visit, consider creating a small information station at the focal point of the living room. This can be a small table next to the couch or at the entryway where you can provide information on things like Wi-Fi passwords, home alarm codes, nearby stores and other general information that might be essential when you are away.

6. Prepare a Sweet Send-Off

Wrap up a memorable stay by preparing a sweet dessert for your guests to take home. They’ll always be coming back for more!
