Cleaning for Holiday Visitors

11/26/2018 (Permalink)

The holiday season is certainly the most joyous time of the year. It’s a time to fulfill your sweet tooth and not worry about gaining a few pounds.

More importantly, it’s a time to spend quality time with friends and family. But prepping your home for holiday guests can be hectic.

Here are some cleaning tips to help you through the process:

Tidying Up Your Home for Holiday Visitors

1. Declutter the Guest Bedroom

First things first, you’ll want to clear out the guest bedroom to create more space for your visitors. To do this, remove unnecessary items from the closets and dressers. Visitors tend to feel more welcomed when they are able to unpack easily.

Since the guest bedroom is rarely occupied, take time and dust the nightstands, knickknacks, picture frames, and headboards. Don’t forget the baseboards, ceiling fans, mini-blinds, and windows.

2. Provide Clean Beddings and Linens

The bed sheets and duvets for the guest bedroom might be in storage for quite a while, so be sure to launder them again to remove the mustiness. This requires prior planning as some comforters and duvets may require professional cleaning.

Additionally, ensure you stock up enough towels to last your guests throughout their stay. Each visitor should have a set of bath towels, washcloths, and hand towels. If you don’t have a stockpile of towels, place a laundry basket in the bathroom so that you can clean the linens as needed.

3. Freshen Up Your Home

The smell of your home is the first thing your guests will notice. Make a good first impression by getting rid of any underlying odor on your carpet or couch, especially if you have pets. While lighting a scented candle may seem like a good way of tackling this issue, it’s not sufficient.

A good rule of thumb is getting your home to a neutral scent and then add a fragrance of your choice.

To achieve this, you can set bowls of white vinegar around the living room – the acidity in vinegar is a good scent neutralizer. For soiled carpet and couches, it’s recommended to call professionals for help.

Also, make sure that the air conditioning systems in the guest bedrooms are working properly before your guests arrive.

4. Make Room for Your Guests

Apart from visitors, the holiday season brings a lot of decorations and gifts which can clutter your home and make it look quite messy. Before your visitors arrive, take some time to remove clutter and unused items around the house.

For example, you can remove the extra shoes, coats, bags, scarves, and other cold-weather gear from the entryway. If you don’t have a place for them, consider adding more baskets, hooks, and racks to corral these items.

Additionally, the kitchen cabinets and counters should be cleared out to make room for candy, cookies, fruitcakes, and any other snacks that your guests may love. Don’t forget to sort out your stacks of magazines and piles of mail.

5. Stock up on Toiletries

Your guests have most probably left their armory of beauty products in favor of travel-friendly water bottles. So consider getting them several personal items like toilet paper, lotion, shampoo, razor, bar soap, toothpaste, toothbrush, body wash, and a bar of soap. Arrange these items in a basket and place it in their bathroom or dresser.

6. Add More Lighting

Though navigating your house at night is seamless to you, the same cannot be said about your guests. Install wall-plug nightlights along hallways and dark rooms to spare your visitors the trouble of scrabbling for light switches in the middle of the night.

7. Keep Your Guests Informed

Place a small card on their bedside or living room with essential information like alarm codes, Wi-Fi passwords, and addresses. Also, if the guests are staying for a few days, give them a spare house key so that they can feel free to explore the nearby malls and stores.
