What Should You Do After a Fire?

2/19/2018 (Permalink)

You may think that house fires are only on the News and in the movies. But this is one home disaster that can easily happen to you.

What if it occurs? Are you prepared?

Not knowing what to do after a fire can be very overwhelming and stressful.

With a little help from your restoration experts and insurance agents, you will be able to get your beloved home back.

Here are some of the things you need to do after a fire incident:

1. Find Somewhere Safe for Your Family

When a fire occurs in your home, you’ll probably not use it for the next 2-7 days (or more) depending on the severity of the damage.

If you can’t stay at your relatives’ or friends’ place, check with your insurance provider and find out whether your family is entitled to stay in a hotel as part of your insurance temporary housing clause.

Alternatively, you could talk to a local disaster relief center like the American Red Cross and let them help you find a safe place for your family to stay temporarily.

2. Take Photos and Videos for Insurance Purposes

Before you start cleaning up and making necessary repairs, ensure you document the water damage for your insurance company by taking photos and videos. Make sure you save these documents safely.

If you start cleaning up before documenting the damage, you could reduce your insurance coverage.

3. Save Your Undamaged Property

Sometimes, the fire department can save part of your house. If this is the case, try to salvage all the undamaged items and store them in a safe place.

If you leave them in the home, they can be destroyed by mold from the water used to put off the fire.

4. List Your Damaged Items

Your insurer will also need a detailed list of your damaged and undamaged inventory. Separating these two will be the best way of making the list.

This list should include the brand name, model, price, and description of each item. If you have the receipts, you can use them as supporting documents.
